How-To Submit to IPAC Research BB V0.1
AFB 1 April 2007
So here are quick step-by step "How-To" guidelines (on the preferred
method) for submitting your research preprints to the IPAC Research
BB.
1) Identify the information you'll need
These are the items you'll *need* to describe your research contribution:
- The $title
(e.g. $title = "Really-New Recent Seminal Results")
- The $authorList and $year for your research contribution
(e.g. $authorList = "W.E. Coyote, Super Genius", $year = 2007)
- The $disposition for your research contribution
(e.g. $disposition = "ApJ in press")
- The $URL for your research -- a link where people can go for more
information on the contribution (e.g. an ADS, astro-ph, or
journal link)
- The $releaseDate for the research contribution
(e.g. $releaseDate = "1 April 2007")
2) Format the HTML entry
The IPAC Research BB HTML is a simple format composed of HTML lists in
a number of categories (e.g. "Extragalactic Astronomy", Solar-System
Astronomy"). Each research contribution appears as a list entry in
the relevant list/category. The generic form of the HTML list entry
is:
[$releaseDate]
"
$title",
$authorList $year,
$disposition
3) Send the (formatted) info/entry in email to bode@ipac.caltech.edu
You can either send the formatted list entry (preferred), just a list
of the required items (less preferred) to bode@ipac.caltech.edu
4) Extra Credit
Here are a few additional items that will further streamline my admin
of the researchBB. Your attention to these is encouraged and
appreciated, but not required.
*** Received comment field ***
I use an HTML comment tag to keep up with when and from whom I
received a contribution (and as a key for the lunch raffle!!!). The
format for that comment (in the context of the contribution list
entry) is really simple:
as in:
[1 April 2007]
"
Really-New Recent Seminal Results",
W.E. Coyote, Super Genius 2007,
ApJ in press
*** Author List Encoding ***
Of course much of our research is in collaboration with folks outside
of IPAC. Since this is an _IPAC_ Research BB, I encode the author
list to call attention to the IPAC authors. Many of you will have
seen that this is done in bold-face:
$authorList =
"...non-IPAC-author, IPAC-author, non-IPAC-author, IPAC-author, ..."
To further call attention to an IPAC-affiliated _lead_ author I use italics:
$authorList =
"IPAC-lead-author, non-IPAC-author, IPAC-author, non-IPAC-author"
*** Disposition encoding ***
It's traditional to italicize the journal where your contribution will
appear, as in:
$disposition = "ApJ in press"
*** URLs ***
I intentionally *don't* have a policy on what URLs you can use -- you
can point to an URL you think best represents your results -- and I
don't intend on editorializing here. But if I could venture a few
recommendations:
-- ADS is probably the best place to point readers for us of the
"touch it once" mindset. Pointing to ADS means the status
information gets updated for you as the manuscript moves through
the processing cycle.
-- I would *not* recommend pointing directly to the journal, as their
content is typically protected (i.e. reader needs a subscription).
5) Examples
