Submillimeter Astronomy Science Workshop for the Herschel Space Observatory/Far Infrared and Submillimeter Telescope (FIRST)

"Herschel/FIRST - A Vision of the Cool Universe"

Final Schedule

A Workshop will be held at Humphrey's Half Moon Inn on Shelter Island, San Diego, 11th to 13th February, 2001, to help inform the US astronomy community of the scientific opportunities available with the Herschel mission (until recently called FIRST). The science workshop will be followed (14th - 16th of February, 2001) by the annual TeraHertz (THz) Technology Symposium (contact Imran Mehdi at imran@merlin.jpl.nasa.gov), where relevant technology will be discussed. Participants will be welcome to attend either or both components. A visit to Composite Optics Inc. will be arranged between the two meetings. Registration for the Herschel Science Workshop is required (see below), but is at no cost.

FIRST/Herschel Mission

"Herschel" is an ESA "Cornerstone Mission" in the Horizon 2000 program, consisting of a passively cooled 3.5m diameter telescope, operating in the 60-600 micron range at the L2 point. There are three instruments in the helium cooled focal plane:

SPIRE, a long wavelength (200 - 670 micron) camera and low resolution spectrometer;

PACS, a short wavelength (60 - 210 micron) camera and low resolution spectrometer; and

HIFI, a high resolution (heterodyne) spectrometer, operating from 450 - 1900 GHz.

NASA's Role: NASA is a partner in the program and has developed appropriate technologies for the Telescope, plus focal plane detector components for HIFI and SPIRE. JPL is the NASA lead center for Herschel and NASA will support US science participation through a US Herschel Science Center at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC).

Format of Workshop: The format of the science workshop will be invited Introductory talks, followed by structured, full workshop discussions whose purpose is to help frame the scientific potential Herschel. In addition, there will be a poster session with opportunity to present science results relevant to the Herschel mission.

Registration: If you wish to attend, please register electronically using the attached registration form. There is no registration fee planned for this workshop, or for workshop registrants attending the THz conference. However, THz Conference only participants should register separately for that conference. Information about securing hotel rooms at Humphrey's Half Moon Inn on Shelter Island will be sent later to registered participants.

Poster Session: There will be an opportunity to present posters relevant to science of the FIRST/Herschel Space Observatory. If you intend to present a poster but have not said so in your registration form please notify Charmaine Mayes. Posters can go up on Sunday and remain until after lunch on Tuesday. Posters should fit within 1.3mx1.3 (4'x4'). Please bring your own pins or tape to mount the posters.

Contacts: The organizing committee is T. Phillips (chair), P. Goldsmith, P. Harvey, M. Harwit, G. Helou, W. Langer, and G. Stringfellow.

Registration forms, and any questions should be sent to charmaine.d.mayes@jpl .nasa.gov
