Some things I like most about Groningen
are: the friendly people, all
people bicycling,
the low-brow sculpture, and the train station. You can see some
of the
sculpture
on my previous trip pages. At the train station you get two of
these favorites. Parked
outside the Groningen Centraal Station train are literally thousands of
bikes. Even more bikes are parked a storage/rental building next to the
station.
The train station architecture is very intricate and fascinating,
especially when the setting Sun lends the interior a beautiful red
glow.
This photo below was a time exposure at dawn of the station ceiling
with no
tripod, so please forgive that it's
out of focus.

Here are a
set of photos that show it better (not mine)....
Bicycles are more natural in Groningen than are cars in Los Angeles.
The city
of Groningen is a leader
in city use of bikes, Outside of China, there is no city with a
larger per capita bicycle usage. Over 50% of all trips are taken on
bike,
making Groningen a world cycling legend.
On this trip I arrived laddened with a 30 lb duffle and a heavy
knapsack, but my companions goaded me into transporting myself through
town to hotel and work via bike.I took the challange. It was cool..

are movies of the bikes and station at dawn on my departure: Centraal Station Movie_1 Movie_2
