Arrived into Lijiang, meeting many new and old colleagues. We stayed at
the the Jade
Dragon Hotel Here the staff are being drilled.
I asked my Chinese host how the kids date (everyone being so socially
formal. But I witnessed an example the first night. There was a "Spring
Festival" of outdoor song and dance. After the end of the
festival two groups of teenagers in costume lined up facing each other
and had a singing/shouting contest. My hosts pointed out - this is the
social interplay.

The view out the hotel window of the pagoda roofed old town leading up
a forested hill was spectacular. Here are scenes out our hotel
conference room window. All roofs in Lijiang are in the pagoda style
and many have intricate carving.

Each night the hotel featured a Naxi cultural show of song and dance.
The first night was fun, after the third night we were compelled to eat
elsewhere. A "Fire Warning" on the hotel room door...- It must be said,
while many English translations provide easy amusement, a westerner
must be humbled that the Chinese can learn our languages but we rarely
theirs. The UNESCO Cultural Heritage Fund City of Lijiang has a busy
touristic Old Town with a waterwheel shown below.
We took a walk to hear the Naxi Orchestra within the Naxi Music
Academy. Thousand year old songs were played on instruments - some
picked up from the Silk Route - from 1000 years ago.

Orchestra Movie (11 Mbytes)
That Night I watched Han Tourists dancing (movie 1.7 Mbytes)
in the street. Lijiang is the sort of town in which the visitors are
likely to dance in the street.
