Ancillary Data Releases
2MASS Ancillary Data Releases
External Review Board - June 2001
I. Working Source Databases (review from June 2000 ERB)
- Contents of the Working Source Databases (Skrutskie)
- Release Options and Resources (Cutri)
- WSDBs can be made available to astronomical community via
via IRSA interface, Caveat Emptor, with existing resources.
- Contents of WSDB's "beyond Catalogs" characterized in appendices of
2MASS Explanatory Supplement
- ``User-friendly" flags (as in Catalogs) being added to WSDBs
during final processing
- Long-term curation costs to IRSA
- Any additional processing or filtering of WSDBs, or release in forms
other than IRSA on-line tools will require additional resources
- Amount will depend on scope of additional processing or release media
- e.g.Duplicate source identification, off-scan artifact flagging,
source combination, DVD or tape distribution...
- Conservative estimate of maximum effort is 6 full-time staff
for 8 months, and up to $50k for distribution costs.
II. Calibration Data
- Forty 1o x 8.5' Calibration Fields observed 800-3000
times during survey. Processed with same pipeline as Survey data, but
less scrutinized for overall quality
- Calibration Source Working Database contains 1.9e8
point and 8e5 extended sources
- Highly redundant detections useful for variability studies, proper motion
measurements, etc
- Release options the same as for Survey Working Source Databases.
Additional costs ~1/6 of WSDB
III. "Deep" Survey Data
- Special observations of Lockman hole, Chandra south, Abell clusters, star forming
regions, 166 deg2 covering SMC and 489 deg2 covering LMC
made using 6x normal survey exposure time (~1 mag deeper)
- Preliminary processing of data made with pipeline (adjusted only
for exposure time difference) validated performance
- Pipeline "tuning" for deep survey data required for optimal
processing would require 3 months effort by 5 engineers
- Artifact identification
- Increased backgrounds
- Test and Validation
- Processing time ~2 months, with 5 person OPS and QA staff
- FPG - Can range from "release Working DB" to "full Catalog generation".
Resource requirements will vary accordingly, but max effort
would require 5-6 full-time staff for up to 3 months.
IV. Plan
- Per the Board's recommendation, the Project desires to release
all of the ancillary data products in forms most useful to the
community, as schedule and resources permit
- Preparation and release of the final survey deliverables has
top priority
- WSDB access can be enabled through IRSA with current resources
- We will prepare a proposal for additional funds to enable
some processing of WSDBs before release, and processing and release
of Deep survey data
