Schedule Detail

2/2/98 2MAPPS v2.0 Subsystem Deliveries

Includes end-to-end system, from Tape_Load to DB and Archive Access tools (IRSA software v1.0).

2/3-15/98 2MAPPS v2.0 System Integration and End-to-End Testing

Acceptance criteria for 2MAPPS v2.0 include:

Functional end-end pipeline. <1% scan processing failures for unknown reasons.
Complete QA output and reporting. All necessary diagnostic output to determine processing success, scientific data quality, and to understand processing failures.
Data can demonstrably meet all Level 1 Science Requirements for the survey (except global photometric uniformity), or have necessary and sufficient diagnostic output to indicate when they do not meet the Requirements.

Point and extended source photometric sensitivity and accuracy
Astrometric precision and accuracy wrt to ACT
Point and Extended source completeness and reliability
Photometric and positional uniformity as tracked by sources in scan overlap regions.
Atlas Image quality.
Other tests as specified by the Science Team

Database system that will load, organize and allow access to all point and extended source data, all scan information, and all relevant calibration and engineering information.
End-to-end runtime allows processing one average night of raw data (~10 hour night) in less than 24 hours.

3/2/98 2MASS Science Team Meeting (IPAC).

Pipeline acceptance review.
Northern data processing operations readiness review.

Cognizant Team members to present performance results for each subsystem.

3/6-5/22/98 2MASS-South Commissioning Support and Southern Pipeline Check-out.

Start date and duration dependent on first light from CTIO and whether northern pipeline will require further modification to adapt to instrumental changes. Best case estimate of time requirement is ~2.5 months after first light.

3/16/98 2MASS-North Operational Processing Begins. Long-term QA and analysis begins.

Dependent on conclusions of 3/2/98 Science Team meeting. If there are no additional liens on pipeline resulting from meeting, then start-up could occur sooner.

5/26/98 2MAPPS v2.1 (south-capable) Subsystem Deliveries.

This is a best-case milestone, assuming no unexpected challenges are found in southern data. This date will slip if major software redesigns, or additional diagnostics and analysis are necessary to accommodate southern data. Approximately 2.5 months of intensive southern data analysis are budgeted to prepare for v2.1 if there are no new developments required for the southern facility data. Note that 2MAPPS north and south will be identical. All observatory and/or hemispheric specific differences will be handled via parameter and name lists.

5/27-6/10/98 2MAPPS v2.1 System Integration and End-to-End Testing

Acceptance criteria for v2.1 identical for v2.0, but inclusive of southern data. Dates highly uncertain.

7/20-21/98 2MASS Science Team Meeting. .

Data Release Discussion.
Review of first 3 months of operation of northern processing.

6/1/98 2MAPPS Parallel Development Pipeline Established.

The parallel pipeline is a platform where development can take place independent of the operational pipeline to handle any newly discovered software problems that compromise the ability to meet Level 1 Science Requirements, or to respond to major hardware emergencies, such as the replacement of arrays in the survey cameras. The parallel development pipeline will not be used as testbed for open-ended algorithm design changes and testing.

Items currently under discussion for working in the parallel development pipeline:

Northern J-band data preprocessing to remove bias fluctuations.

10/1/98 Last Observation Date for Inclusion in First Incremental 2MASS Data Release.

Nominally +12 and +18 degree declination bands. See schedule for 2MASS Data Release for details.
